Study Permits

All foreign nationals require a study permit in order to study in Canada unless exempted. 
Study permit is required to all foreign nationals for engaging in academic, professional, vocational or other education or training that is more than 6 months in duration at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.

Foreign nationals who do not require study permit to go to school in Canada.

  1. Persons who wish to study in a short-term course or program - The student may complete a short-term program of study without a study permit, but they may not be able to apply for a study permit from within Canada if they wish to enrol in subsequent courses that cannot be completed within their original period of authorized stay. Although, students may apply for study permit to complete a short-term program of study, the issuance of study permits is limited to those attending DLI's. 

  2. Foreign representatives to Canada - A family member of staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada may not need a permit to study in Canada. 

  3. Members of foreign armed forces - A member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act, does not need a permit to study in Canada. However, their family members, including minor children, who want to study in Canada must meet the requirements.

  4. Minor children - Minor children in Canada whose parents are authorized to study or work in Canada do not require a study permit to attend pre-school, primary or secondary level schools. These include minor children of refugee claimants but it does not include minor children of persons who are in Canada as visitors.

To accelerate the processing of application, one can apply through Student Direct Stream (SDS). Ability to apply for the same, depends upon the location of the applicant where he/she resides, and availability of all the required documents. 

If one meets the eligibility criteria, one's SDS application, usually, gets accomplished within 20 calendar days. To be eligible, the applicant must be from one of the listed countries -
